Abstract
The Republic of Iraq is situated in the Middle East. It is bounded on the north by Turkey, on the east by Iran, on the southeast by the Arabian Gulf, on the west by Syria and Jordan, and on the south by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Called Mesopotamia (the land between the two rivers) by the classical world, the country became known as Iraq in the 7th century. Baghdad, the national capital, is almost as ancient as the country itself.
