Abstract

The Mesa Verde is a pinyon-and juniper-covered plateau about 180 square miles in area, located north of the San Juan River in southwestern Colorado. The Plateau ranges in elevation between 6,500 and 8,500 feet, sloping gently from north to south with its surface eroded into a number of deep, sandstone-walled canyons. Within these canyons lies one of the greatest concentrations of cliff dwellings in the Southwest.
