Abstract

For 3,272 individuals from the Aland Islands, patterns of genetic variation are analyzed. To study temporal trends, the sample is divided into three age cohorts . Gene frequencies ore calculated for 13 genetic systems, and genetic distance measures, Wright's Fst, and the parameters of Malecot 's isolation by distance equation ore calculated. Also, the principal components of the distance matrices are computed and rotated to maximum congruence with the geographic locations of the subdivisions. These analyses indicate that Aland's isolated outer island parishes are genetically more heterogeneous than the more centrally located main island parishes. Temporal trends in these measures are not clearly evident. However, by calculating nonparametric correlations between the upper triangles of the genetic distance matrices, parent-offspring migration matrices, and matrices of estimated inter-subdivision drift, it is possible to demonstrate that the effect of genetic drift on genetic distance decreases through time, while the effect of gene flow on genetic distance increases.
