Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the nature of the godparenthood institution among Spanish-Americans living in Martineztown, an urban area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two considerations prompted the selection of this research problem: (1) There is a dearth of historical and contemporary data on ritual kinship in New Mexico, and (2) relatively little is known about the form and function of the godparenthood institution in an urban area. The major objectives of this study are to discover whether or not ritual relationships are of functional utility among the Spanish-Americans residing in this community and to determine whether or not the core beliefs and customs associated with the system in other areas are found here.
