Abstract
The biography which follows, the first part of a projected three-volume work, will cover the years from 1874 to 1919, the end of Beard's formal teaching career. During this period, starting in 1900, he wrote more than fifteen books and a hundred book reviews, besides numerous pamphlets and articles. More than ten million of his books have been sold, some of them abroad, and they are still being reprinted. Eventually he became the president of both the American Political Science Association and the American Historical Association, and in 1948 the National Institute of Arts and Letters recognized his life's work with the presentation of their gold medal, awarded once every ten years.
