Abstract
Traditional American institutions presently are under attack, and at least three responses to this attack are reflected in contemporary culture. Some persons refuse to acknowledge the legitimate existence of criticism; other persons resolutely sound the call to retreat to the tested visions of the past; and still others begin to assess the alternatives which may extricate society from the prevailing attack. This study is written in the spirit of the latter alternative, and with the conviction that the time has come to assess seriously possible variations upon the capitalistic-democratic theme.
