Description

The Seventeeth century Jesuit Cathedral overlooking the Terreiro de Jesus. Its solid architecture and undecorated facade stands in stark contrast with the majority of the baroque churches in the vicinity. The Terreiro de Jesus is located in the Cidade Alta, 72 meters above sea level. Despite the importance of the port infrastructure to the activities of the town, the major praga (town square), government buildings and churches were built on elevated locations away from the waterfront because of the threat of attacks from the sea.A Catedral dos Jesuítas do século XVII, dando vista para o Terreiro de Jesus. Sua arquitetura sólida e sua fachada não decorada esta em forte contraste com a maioria das igrejas barrocas da vizinhança. O Terreiro de Jesus está localizado na Cidade Alta, 72 metros acima do nível do mar. Apesar da importância da infra-estrutura portuária para as atividades da cidade, a praça principal, as construções do governo e as igrejas, foram construidas em localidades elevadas, longe da orla marítima, por causa das ameaças de ataques vindos do mar.
