Description

Smiling member of the samba group Ilê Ayê in Salvador (BA). The labor intensive sugar economy that was established in the zona da mata in the Northeast was dependent on massive infusions of African slave labor. (Slaves also fulfilled important domestic and artisan functions in colonial society). The Northeast has the highest Afro-Brazilian population in Brazil, especially in the Babian Recóncavo region. African influence is especially apparent in Brazilian cuisine, music, dance, and religious practices.Membro sorridente do grupo de samba Ilê Ayê, em Salvador (BA). A economia açucareira que foi implantada na zona da mata do Nordeste dependia da importação maciça de escravos africanos.(Escravos exerceram importante papel também em serviços domésticos e artesanais na sociedade colonial). O Nordeste tem a maior população afro-brasileira do Brasil, principalmente na região do Recóncavo baiano. A influência africana se fez especialmente marcante no Brasil na culinária, na música, na dança e nas práticas religiosas.
