Woman washing dishes in a local stream in the state of Pernambuco, while her kids refresh themselves in the cool water. Historically, the Northeast was the most populous and for many years a comparatively profitable region of Brazil. Both animals and plants, as well as those living in the hinterland, are a hardy lot, able to adapt to the harsh environment.
