Abstract
The Independence Movement of Paraguay during the years 1806-1814 has similarities to the vast revolutionary current elsewhere in the Spanish Empire in the first decades of the nineteenth century. There also, criollos of the province had prospered under the Borbon reforms and became increasingly jealous of the favoritism shown to the Spanish- born. In addition, the events of the Napoleonic Wars affected Paraguay as much as they did other Spanish colonies in the New World. However, owing to this area's unique cultural and geographical isolation, the path followed by Paraguay varied in certain respects from the revolutionary paths elsewhere in Spain's American domains.
