Abstract
The famous Perez exploratory expedition of 1774 and the epochal Hezeta-Bodega voyage of 1775, by which Spa n laid a fresh claim to the Far Northwest, were important segments of the last great chapter of Spanish colonization and exploration along the vast North American Pacific coast. This final, magnificent period began, appropriately enough, in Madrid, Spain, with the appointment of Jose de Galvez as visitadorgeneral of New Spain on February 20, 1765. The new visitador set sail with his official family from Cadiz aboard a frigate of war, the Jason, on April 26, 1765, and arrived at Veracruz the following July.
