Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the course of civil-military relations in Venezuela from the death of Juan Vicente Gómez in 1935 to the presidential inauguration of Rómulo Betancourt in 1959. This is a facet of Venezuelan politics that has not yet received adequate attention from historians. Most scholarly investigations have centered about political parties and outstanding political personalities, whereas this treatise will concentrate on the military institution as it interacted with civilian forces in the political arena. Hopefully, it will be a contribution not only to our understanding of contemporary political developments in Venezuela in particular, but to the study of Latin American militarism in general.
