Abstract

The subject of "Edward Alfred Pollard, the Richmond Examiner, and the Confederacy" was chosen because a thesis on Pollard would not be complete without reference to the Richmond Examiner of which he was a co-editor during a good part of the Civil War, and both of these bear heavily on upon the confederacy. Pollard's prominence was due to the fact that he and the newspaper he represented were outstanding voices of the opposition to the administration in the Confederacy. His principal target was the chief executive, Jefferson Davis. At his feet Pollard placed the responsibility for the failure of the Southern cause.
