Abstract
There is an immediate cause for discussing the realistic village. At the present time the small town is depleted of all its youth. Those who are not in the various branches of the armed forces have gone into defense work or are filling posts left vacant by those who have done so. The village is deserted or is a refuge for the old and for the very young. The lay reader is bombarded with articles concerning this shift of population, the housing problem it has created, the moral degradation it has caused, and the serious shortage of agrarian labor that has resulted from the rural population migrating to urban centers.
