Colonial Latin American Historical Review

Volume 9, Issue 1 (Winter 2000)

From the Editor's Desk

Dr. Della Flusche's amicable association with CLAHR began quietly in 1993 when she subscribed to our journal. Shortly thereafter, she submitted a study to CLAHR entitled "Doña Isabel Osorio de Cáceres: Chilean Matriarch" which was published in CLAHR vol. 3, no. 1 (Winter 1994). Subsequently, she often served as a referee for mauscripts under consideration for publication in CLAHR.

Almost a year before her death in the summer of 1999, she submitted a large manuscript, "The Tribunal of Posthumous Estates in Colonial Chile, 1540-1769," for our consideration. Given the book-length size of the manuscript, Dr Flusche explained the importance of the work to the historiography of Chile's colonial past. Indeed, in her introduction, she eloquently summarized her conviction by writing: "This study therefore breaks new ground as an exposition of financial records of the Tribunal of Posthumous Estates in colonial Santiago, Chile. Its primary purpose is to describe the contents of the reams of double-sided folios in the account books." It is with pride that CLAHR presents this study in a four-part serialized publication as a gift from Dr Flusche to our readership.
