Abstract
This is a political portrait of a Cuban priest and patriot, Félix Varela y Morales. One of the most fascinating and influential figures in the great history of Cuba during the 19th century, he moved easily from philosophy and science to politics and finally to theology. Others have dealt in some detail with Varela’s accomplishments as reformer and teacher of philosophy in Cuba (Antonio Hernández Travieso) and as Catholic apologist and priest in New York (José Ignacio Rodríguez, Doctor Joseph McCadden.) A few Cuban scholars have examined phases of Félix Varela’s political career, but thus far no single work has made a detailed study of this phase of his life and writing.
