Abstract
In May 2001 the Government approved a strategy for the electrification of unserved areas along the coast of Guyana. This policy guided the development of the Unserved Areas Electrification Programme. It states that the government will examine ways of providing electricity to unserved areas in the hinterland in the most cost effective, sustainable and environmentally benign manner while at the same time increasing benefits associated with electricity. Section III states that there will be training plans aimed at strengthening the professional capabilities and at promoting a cleaner and more rational use of conventional energy, its efficient use and that of renewable energies.
