Abstract

Any conflict as profound as the American Civil War might well be expected to have brought about far-reaching changes in family life, business, politics, and cultural interests of the North. Music may be taken as a representative cultural activity which is worthy of separate study to determine the extent of the war's influence. Since New York and Boston were musically significant, an analysis of concerts, opera, and virtuosi in these cities during the war years has been attempted as the theme of this research.
