Abstract
Acknowledging [the Southwest's] Catholic heritage, all artists who portrayed this land could not fail to show the influence and importance of the Catholic Church. In search of a subject for this thesis, my curiosity was aroused to find out just how the Church was portrayed in the fiction of the Southwest; no such study had been done before on that subject. Upon investigation, another point of interest developed: of all of the fiction writers studied for that particular area, only Paul Horgan is Catholic. Hence, it was of great interest of the writer of this monograph to discover how the Church was seen and interpreted by those outside her pale.
