Description

Old men of various ethnic origins chatting in the plaza in downtown Sao Paulo. By 1890, Sao Paulo was only the fourth largest city with a little more than 60,000 inhabitants, compared to Rio de Janeiro's half million. With the expansion of the manufacturing sector, which boomed due to a shortage of European products as a result of World War I, the city was flooded with new immigrants. By 1920, Sao Paulo had nearly 580,000 inhabitants, making it the second city behind Rio's 1.1 million. By the 1950s, Sao Paulo overtook Rio and became one of the fastest growing cities in the world.
