Abstract

The report evaluates the quantitative relationships between commercial banking structures and general economic development across eight western states during the decade of the 1960s. This report aggregates structural data from 1960 through 1970 to compare four states utilizing unrestricted statewide branch banking (SB) against four non-statewide branching states (NSB, including New Mexico). The analysis demonstrates that the branching states consistently achieved superior rates of population, employment, and personal income growth, while simultaneously maintaining higher loan-to-asset metrics, greater long-term risk capacity, and expanded geographic banking office density per capita.
