Abstract
The study evaluates population trends, employment, income, agriculture, mining, forestry, manufacturing, education, welfare dependency, transportation, tourism, utilities, and local government finance during a period when northern New Mexico was confronting persistent economic and social challenges. The report portrays Rio Arriba as a county of exceptional natural beauty and cultural significance that nevertheless faced chronic unemployment, low-income levels, inadequate infrastructure, educational shortcomings, outmigration of working-age residents, and increasing reliance on public assistance.
