Abstract

The study examines the economic importance of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to the economies of Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, and Santa Fe Counties and evaluates the potential consequences of defense-related downsizing. Prepared by the University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research, the study was undertaken during a period of declining federal defense expenditures and growing concern regarding the future role of national laboratories. Using socioeconomic profiling, regional economic analysis, business and community surveys, and econometric modeling, the report assesses the region’s economic strengths and weaknesses, measures LANL’s direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts, and estimates the effects of alternative downsizing scenarios.
