Abstract
It will be the purpose of this paper to examine the factors that have affected the development of a single Northwest Coast culture complex, the dugout canoe. The dugout was chosen because it is an item of material culture, because of its important position in Northwest Coast culture, and because of the light it may case on Asiatic-Northwest Coast culture relationships.
