Abstract

In the modeling of plutonium nitrate systems for criticality calculations, the chemical formula is usually assumed to be Pu(N03)4 (where plutonium is in the +4 valence state). However in a unique situation of chemistry, plutonium has four oxidation states (III), (IV), (V), and (VI) that can exist in finite concentrations, simultaneously in aqueous solutions, in equilibrium with each other.
