Description

Join LAII and UNM Music for a talk led by LAII Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar, Dr. Javier Marín-López.

In use from the mid-16th century, the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro was part of a global network of intercontinental roads and sea circuits designed by the Spanish monarchy to promote evangelization, encourage trade, and connect the different regions of the empire. This lecture will explore the function and significance of circulating sound in the symbolic construction of this trail. Dr. Marín-Lopez will pay special attention to the impact of this historic and cultural route on shaping the distinctive soundscape of the province of New Mexico from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

Dr. Javier Marín-López is a Full Professor of Musicology at the University of Jaén, Spain, and holds a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of Granada. His research focuses on various aspects of Latin American and Spanish musical culture from the 16th to the 19th centuries, with particular emphasis on transatlantic exchanges within broader European and global contexts. He is the author and/or editor of ten books published by prestigious presses such as SEdeM, ICCMU, Reichenberger, Dykinson, UNIA, Dairea, and Vervuert. From 2013 to 2021, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of Spain’s premier musicological journal, Revista de Musicología, and since 2007, he has been the General and Artistic Director of the Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza. He was the 2023-2024 Richard E. Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar, an award granted by the Latin American & Iberian Institute at the University of New Mexico.
