Human Trafficking in Manipur: A Study of Tribal & Nepalese Survivors

Description

Human trafficking in Manipur is vastly different from the human trafficking in other parts of India and this caveat is a necessary precondition to enter into any discussions on human trafficking. Manipur emerged as a source and transit for human trafficking. In February 2019, 179 Nepalese nationals were rescued in Manipur while they were in transit to Myanmar and their destinations include the Middle East and West Asia. This study seeks to establish a couple of aspects that is connected with neo-liberalism. Firstly, the nature of globalization in the global south has made us as unequal or junior partners in this process where the debates on policing and prevention are the responsibility of the global south. In this strange scenario, another important structural instability is the ever-changing nature of technology that leads to a cat and mouse game between the law enforcement authorities and the criminals leading to many gaps that are exploited by the traffickers as the case studies showed. This study also seeks to examine the linkage between commercial sex work and human trafficking in Manipur.
