Abstract
Brand Whitlock lived a varied and active life during an extremely complex period of our history. The threads have not, by any means, been disentangled, but there are some generalizations which may be made. Even though they offer the difficulties that all generalizations do, the following tentative conclusions may be of some help in fitting the man into his time; they may be used, perhaps, as a framework on which to hang the complexities.
