Abstract
Independent learning is frequently subscribed to by educational reformers, theorists, researchers and practitioners. Although attempts are being made to implement and to investigate this goal, there is little evidence that a comprehensive description of independent learning has been developed. Yet, a comprehensive description is needed if independent learning is to be treated thoroughly and systematically. The purpose of this dissertation is to construct a classification system that delineates major classes and sub-classes of independent learning behaviors. Having formed such a classification system, educators should be able to discuss and further develop programs for independent learning with greater precision.
