Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyzes selected teacher and student variables pertaining to personal and background characteristics, perceptions, preferences and achievement.
The study sample consisted of social studies teachers and their classes in 34 New Mexico rural or small-town schools. Most of te selected schools have a relatively high enrollment of minority group, low socioeconomic status (SES) students. Subjects are 60 teachers and 1255 students, representing approximately one-fifth of the senior high population of the participating schools.
