Abstract
The great majority of those who teach in junior high and middle schools have not experienced a professional preparation intended specifically for teachers of these grades. It would seem reasonable that the teachers for the junior high and middle schools should be prepared in programs specifically designed for teachers of these grades, programs that are distinct and different from either the traditional elementary or secondary type of teacher preparation. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the perceptions of principals of junior high and middle schools concerning what they felt to be important in the preparation of teachers of junior high and middle schools, as well as desirable characteristics, attitudes, and competencies of such teachers.
