Abstract

This study was conducted to determine:

1) what the different viewing habits were of children in special education and regular education programs,

2) what the different viewing habits were of children from different ethnic backgrounds, and

3) what the different viewing habits were of children living in different population settings.

It was known that commercial television had Statewide coverage through one or more channels. The initial survey of the study sought to determine the range and use of the educational channel. Educational television capability was reported in approximately half of the school districts in the State. A review of the school enrollment being served by these districts revealed seventy percent of the State's school population. The educational channel was reaching or had capability of reaching most of the children being educated in New Mexico public schools.

A second survey directed at special education disclosed varying but enthusiastic use of programs being broadcast over State commercial and educational television channels

Conclusions

The study concluded that there are:

1) no significant differences between the vi􀀭wing habits of children in special and regular education programs,

2) no significant differences between the viewing habits of children from different ethnic backgrounds (an exception here was the ruralisolated group), and

3) there were significant correlations for population. The ruralurban group may have been atypical and the rural isolated group may have been influenced by life style of sample group.

Including the exceptions cited in the findings, the study concluded that children view a great deal of television, that television is being used as a medium of education in New Mexico public schools, and that teachers are interested in using television programming as a means of educating the children under their care.
