Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare required physical education service programs with elective physical education service programs for the 1971-72 academic school year.
The survey was limited to 412 public supported colleges and universities which are coeducational and have four year curricula. Each institution has also been accredited by the Federation of Regional Accrediting Commissions of Higher Education.
A questionnaire was the instrument utilized to gather factual information for use in comparisons. It was mailed, accompanied by a cover letter and return address with postage, to each Chairman of the Department of Physical Education of the 412 institutions chosen for this study. A follow-up letter and another questionnaire were sent to those institutions which had not returned their completed questionnaires. December 1, 1972 was selected as the date for which no additional returns would be included in the data analysis. Twelve hypotheses were tested using twelve individual t tests (Bonferroni t procedure). A family-wise error rate of .05 was used for the t tests. The computer at The University of New Mexico was utilized to tabulate all data. An Alphanumeric Frequency Count program, BMD04D, and a Simple Data Description program, BMD01D, were used.
It was found that there was a significant difference between schools with required physical education programs and schools with elective physical education programs on the following terms:
- Institutional enrollment.
- Enrollment in the service program, proportional to the institution enrollment.
- Activity class costume requirement.
- Average class size.
- The number of activity class credits allowed toward graduation.
- The number of schools with required and elective programs.
There was no significant difference found between schools with required physical education programs and schools with elective physical education programs on the following items:
- Proportionately, the number of students who participated in intramural sports.
- Proportionately, the number of different service program activity courses offered.
- Proportionately, the number of different coeducational activity classes offered.
- The physical education faculty salary range.
- The number of service program classes required of physical education majors.
- The amount of time spent in activity classes per week.
Results of this study indicate that there are significant differences between the required and elective physical education service programs. In addition, several untested differences are apparent through comparisons of means.
