Abstract
The general problem was: (a) to rank and compare the quality of the men's campus recreation-intramural sports programs at the eight colleges and universities in the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by the means of A Score Card to Evaluate the Men's Intramural Programs in Four Year Colleges and Universities (McKillip, 1973); (b) to measure student participants' attitudes toward the Men's Campus Recreation-Intramural Sports Programs at the Colleges and Universities in the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by the means of an Intramural Attitude Questionnaire (Maurer, 1972); (c) to test the relationship between selected quality components of the men's campus recreation-intramural sports programs based upon the results obtained by the Score Card, and the results of selected student participants' attitudes obtained from the Intramural Attitude Questionnaire. The colleges and universities comprising the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, namely: North Dakota State University, The University of North Dakota, South Dakota State University, The University of South Dakota, The University of Northern Iowa, Morningside College, Augustana College, and The University of Nebraska at Omaha were surveyed by means of A Score Card to Evaluate the Men's Intramural Programs in Four Year Colleges and Universities to determine how each of the selected institutions ranked in terms of overall quality of the men‘s campus recreation-intramural sports programs when compared to the standards contained in the score card. The Intramural Attitude Questionnaire was administered to selected male participants in the fall intramural sports at each institution to determine how the student intramural participants ranked in terms of attitudes toward the intramural sports programs. The data related to participant attitudes and program quality were presented by means of descriptive statistics. The hypotheses dealing with the relationship between selected quality and attitude components were tested by the use of the Spearman Rank-Order Correlation. The study results indicated that:
1. Six of the eight institutions studied rated average (70% of 2000 possible points) or better in terms of the quality of the men's campus recreation-intramural sports programs.
2. Overall, positive attitudes were held by the selected male student participants toward the four selected areas studied: faculty leadership, student leadership, program and facilities.
3. Of the four components selected (faculty leadership, student leadership, program and facilities) one significant relationship existed between the selected male participants’ attitudes and the quality of the selected campus recreation-intramural sports programs' facilities.
