Description

View of the city of Rio de Janeiro and the Guanabara Bay from the hilltop of the Corcovado on which stands the statue of Christ the Redeemer. In the background on the other side of the bay is the city of Niteroi(RJ) and located on the right is the conical Sugar Loaf, one of the landmarks of the city. In contrast to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro is located on Guanabara Bay among a number of conical, flattopped hills along the tropical coast. On January 1, 1532, Martim Afonso de Sousa mistook the bay for a river, which gave the city its name. ln the early colonial period the town prospered exporting agricultural products. During the Eighteenth Century the city became the administrative center for the enormous outflow of gold and precious stones from the mining regions, which led to its designation as colonial capital. With the arrival of the Portuguese court in 1808, Rio de Janeiro temporarily became the seat of tbe Portuguese Empire. By the turn of the century Rio de Janeiro could boast having more industrial establishments than São Paulo and today naval construction and petrochemicals are among the city's most mportant industrial activities. No início do período colonial cidade prosperou, exportando produtos agrícolas.
