Description

Despite the existence of various large rivers such as Jequitinhonha (southern Bahia), most of the agreste and especially the sertão remains semi-arid. During drought periods the rivers recede rapidly and in many areas even completely dry up. When this happens, scenes as here in the interior of the state of Paraíba, where women can wade through the river's shallow waters (usually several meters deep) to wash clothes, are very common. Several rivers have bored fertile valleys through the and, given adverse the climatic conditions in the rest of the region, these areas are densely populated.
