Popular demonstration in Brasília. Crowds of Brazilians in the early 1980s took to the streets to show their disapproval of the military regime. Diretas were held for Congress and the state governments, but the president was to be elected through indirect elections, voted by an electoral college. ln 1985, Tancredo Neves, a moderate opposition candidate, was elected president and began a new era of civilian rule. Unfortunately, Neves died before he could take office and his vice president José Sarney, a conservative nonentity, replaced him.Demonstração popular em Brasília. Milhares de brasileiros no início dos anos de 1980 tomaram as ruas para demonstrar sua reprovação ao regime militar. As diretas foram defendidas pelo Congreso e pelos governos estaduais, mas o presidente seria eleito através de eleições indiretas, efetuadas pelo colégio eleitoral. Em 1985, Tancredo Neves, candidato da oposição moderada, foi eleito presidente e começaria uma nova era de governo civil. Infelizmente, Neves morreu antes de tomar posse e seu vice-presidente José Sarney, um conservador sem projeção, tomou seu lugar.
