Slum settlement on the outskirts of the city, where most shacks are built on stilts to avoid being flooded when the river rises. Like all the other large cities in Brazil, both Belém and Manaus suffer from pathological population growth, outstripping alI efforts to provide urban infrastructures. These shantytowns or "favelas" house migrants from the interior and especially from the Northeast who have come in search of a better life in the city.Favela nas rendondezas da cidade, onde a maioria das cabanas são construídas sobre estacas para prevenir a inundação quando as águas do rio sobem. Como todas as outras grandes cidades do Brasil, tanto Belém como Manaus sofrem de crescimento populacional patológico deixando para trás todos os esforços destinados ao provimento de infraestrutura urbana. Essas favelas abrigam imigrantes do interior, especialmente do Nordeste, que vêm à procura de melhor vida na cidade.
