Abstract

At Los Alamos, one of the Van de Graaff acceleration is used to accelerate tritons up 2.5 Mev in energy. Using the machine and bombarding a lithium target, one can study the Li7 (T, ∞) He6 reaction. Observing the energy of the ∞-particles from this reaction, once can determine energy levels of He6 .

A board-range spectrograph employing a 30-inch nuclear-track plate has been constructed an employed in the conjunction with the Van de Graaff. The construction and operation of the spectrograph are described.

Preliminary results from scanning and exposed nuclear plates gives evidence for the ground state and the first excited state of He6 with energy of the first excited state being 1.772 ± 0.017 Mev.
