Abstract

Forests occupy a well known and vital part of our national economy. Few people will dispute the fact that the proper care and maintenance of our forests is necessary to meet the increasing demands of the country for more lumber, lumber by-products, grazing land, soil protection, flood control, and recreational facilities. Furthermore, forests serve as a huge national reservoir for the nation's supply of rainfall, a factor that can hardly be underestimated, especially in the Rocky Mountain area. It is therefore easy to conclude that one of our major problems is to prevent the widespread deforestation of the United States which has been so predominant in the last hundred years.
