Description

One of the many waterfalls, whose waters originate in the Serra do Mar, this one which is located dose to the beach resort of Ubatuba (SP). The vegetation in these coastal mountain ranges and plains is predominately of the type of the mata atlântica or zona da mata. As this narrow coastal belt stretches south from Bahia it widens into southern Minas Gerais and a large part of the state of São Paulo, where the vegetation may be referred to as floresta tropical or floresta semi-úmida. In contrast to the mata atlântica, the trees have thinner trunks and the vegetation is less dense which is due to the lower rainfall. However, with the exception of the more elevated and steep slopes, little remains in this region of the original semi-deciduous tropical forest which has been cut down for charcoal or timber (notably cedar, jacarandá or peroba) and replaced by agriculture. In the coastal plains the climate is characterized by heavy rainfall, high humidity and elevated temperatures. However, in the serras and plateaus subtropical climatic conditions exist as the temperatures vary with latitude and altitude. In the highlands of Minas Gerais and São Paulo frosts are common and temperatures may drop below 5 degrees Celsius when cold fronts flow northward during the winter months of June through August.
