Description

During the long and frequent droughts the sun scortches the earth in much of the sertão, such as here in the southern part of the state of Ceará. Annual rainfall in this semi-arid hinterland area is seldom higher than 850 mm and it rains irregularly, but almost never during the dry season, which spans from July to January. The topology of the chapadas includes a number of (broad and flat uplands) and abrupt ranges with eroded surfaces. The sertãois characterized by the caatinga or brushwood zone, where sparse vegetation exits. Numerous cacti species with colorful names like xique-xique or mandacaru, thorny bushes and short twisted trees with deep roots (which lose their leaves during the dry season) inhabit this arid subregion. The plants are not only able to withstand aridity but also take advantage of the seasonal rains. During brief periods of rain the sertão quickly blooms and the barren land turns green.Durante as longas e frequentes secas, o sol queima o solo de quase todo o sertão, assim como aqui na parte sul do Ceará. A precipitação pluviométrica anual nesta região semi-árida é raramente superior aos 850 mm, é bastante irregular.
