Description

One of the fortified towers of the Santo António da Barra Fort (better known as Farol da Barra) in Salvador (BA) at sunset. In 1549, in view of the failure of the captaincy system, the Portuguese Crown decided to establish a central administration in Salvador to coordinate colonization and settlement. Similar forts were built in Natal, Belém, Olinda, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, and elsewhere because of the threat of attacks from the sea.Forte de Santo António da Barra (mais conhecido como Farol da Barra) em Salvador (BA) ao pór-do-sol. Em 1549, devido à deficiência do sistema de capitanias, a Coróa portuguesa decidiu estabelecer uma administraçílo central em Salvador para melhor coordenar a colonizaçâo e o assentamento populacional. Fortalezas como esta foram construídas em Natal, Belém, Olinda, Recife, Rio de Janeiro e outros lugares por causa da ameaça de ataques marítimos.
