Description

Fort Orange, located near Olinda (Pernambuco), was built by the Dutch in 1630. Given the vulnerability of its extensive coastline, Brazil continued to be attacked during the early colonial period. The French occupied the area of what is today Rio de Janeiro for a few years until 1565 and the Dutch managed to establish themselves in the sugar-growing Pernambuco region from 1630-1654. Early settlers to Brazil were adventurers, a few noblemen and Jesuit missionaries who were sent to convert the local Indians to Catholicism.
