Vitória Régiz lilies covering this river lowland area. In the background looms dense forest vegetation. Most of the Amazon Basin is covered by dense equatorial rain forest, though the region also includes savanna areas. Much of the forest along the rivers ("igapó") is flooded during the whole year, while other forest areas are covered on1y during the rainy seasons. The latter, called "várzeas," occur when the rivers swell and overflow.Vitória Régia cobrindo esse rio de terras baixas. Ao fundo aparece a densa vegetação da floresta. A maior parte da Bacia Amazóllica é coberta por densa floresta equatorial, embora a região também inclua áreas de savana. A maior parte da floresta ao longo dos rios ("igapó") é inundada durante o ano todo. Outras áreas da floresta, as chamadas " várzeas", são cobertas de água somente durante a estação das chuvas quando os rios sobem e inundam tudo.
