Description

Zebu cattle (a Brahma subspieces imported from India during the colonial period and interbreed) grazing in the arid sertão or hinterland in the Northeast. In order to supply the coastal sugar states, urban centers and later mining regions, with meat, leather, beasts of burden and other foodstuffs, large ranches or wandering herds were established during the colonial period in the sertão. These cattle herds developed in the best watered areas, especially in Bahia and Pernambuco along the São Francisco river. The labor force on the ranches were primarily mixed bloods, for the relative social freedom in the hinterland was appealing to those whose social position would otherwise be marginal.
